The Story of the St. James Rose Window

St. James Rose Window

Commissioned in memory of Richard Patrick Lyon

Many of us have not been aware of the rich history of our wonderful window. Our Beloved Rose Window is actually the Richard Patrick Lyon Memorial Rose Window. What many of us may not know is that the Rose Window was commissioned by the Lyon family after the tragic death to cancer of their son, 11 year-old Patrick. Patrick is the “face behind the Rose Window” and will forever be to us a symbol of the young generation with whom we are called to share the Gospel.

The Rose Window was designed by the noted stained glass artist, Mr. Roy W. Coomber and made by the J. Wippell studio in England. It features some very Significant spiritual symbols:

The Dove and Flames (symbol and power of the Holy Spirit)
The Fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22)

The Petals:   Love = the Rose         Joy = the Banner of Victory
Peace = the Olive Branch                Meekness = the Yoke
Patience = the Palm & Crown of Martyrdom
Faithfulness = the Cup/Chalice      Temperance = the Bite
Gentleness = Lily of the Valley       Goodness = the Bible
